TaskRabbit started in eleventh grade and kept running through college, generating over $50K in total revenue along the way.

I started out charging around $20 to $25 an hour. Over time, I built up enough reviews and repeat business that by college I was able to charge $125 an hour.

The work itself was direct and physical: construction help, moving help, logistics, customer service, and whatever needed to get done in front of a real person paying for the result.

That kind of work teaches a few things fast:

  • be useful quickly
  • read what people actually need, not just what they say
  • keep moving
  • earn trust through repetition
  • realize that pricing power is partly a story about reliability
